Really interesting unit with an incredible number of features including a full editing console that detaches from the tray in the front. I've done my best to test this unit, but I don't have the knowledge of video editing it would take to put it through its paces fully. I can say that this unit successfully plays and records DV audio and video through all four sets of input and output jacks. Play, fast forward, rewind, stop, pause, and frame-by-frame advance/rewind all work fine. Ejecting the tape seemed a little slow to me, but I've never seen any more of these decks to make a comparison. I only tested it with MiniDV media, though -- I don't have any full size DV media. As far as I know they would take the same tape path through the machine, but I'm not an expert. A previous owner has modified this deck in two ways that I can see. First, the small socket to insert a two-prong power cord has been removed, and a socket for a full-size grounded three-prong cord has been added in its place. Second, the three RCA composite video ports on the back have been replaced with BNC-style ports. These ports work fine. I'm including three BNC-to-RCA adapters, as shown in the pictures, so you won't have any trouble using standard RCA cables. Cosmetically there are some superficial scratches and scuffs here and there, all shown in the pictures. The only noteworthy problem with this machine is that the S-Video port for LINE-1 OUT is damaged and unusable. This is physical damage to the exterior of the port itself. It seems melted -- the only thing I can think is a soldering accident, although I can't say for sure because I'm not the original owner. I couldn't get this deck to communicate in any way with my computer through the FireWire / 1394 port in the front. Not sure if this is a problem in the DV player's port, my motherboard, or (my guess) just a compatibility issue due to the relative age of the DV player. Looking for solutions online, I found that some PC users were having similar problems with compatibility even in the days of Windows XP. That said, I can't guarantee that the unit has a working FireWire port. As well, the plastic facade over the REW key on the editing controller is ripped and pushed down a little, as shown. This is only a cosmetic problem that doesn't keep you from pushing and using the REW key normally, and it certainly doesn't make the machine rewind at random. The black plastic cage is missing over the heat sink in the back. As far as I can think of, this doesn't really have any effects except that a little more dust might get in the unit. I saw slight, occasional pixelation when playing and recording. From what I've read (again, not an expert), this is a sign that the heads could use some cleaning. Finally, this isn't a particularly quiet deck. It makes humming noises even when the tape isn't playing. Not sure if this is a sign of the motors needing attention, or just the way this model is.
